Camden claws to win in OT

Annie Payton scored 24 points as the Panthers ousted scrappy Sterling in the South Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal contest.

It took every last second of overtime for the Camden girls' basketball team to beat Sterling, 54-52, in the South Jersey Group 2 quarterfinal matchup last night.Led by scrappy and extremely quick guard Annie Payton, who led all scorers with 24 points, the sixth-seeded Panthers overcame a shift in momentum at the end of the fourth quarter to beat the third-seeded Knights.
With less than six seconds left on the clock in regulation, junior guard Kylie O'Donnell shot a three from well beyond the arch to tie the game at 49 for the Knights. The gym at Sterling erupted as fans, players and coaches jumped out of their seats in celebration.
For the Panthers, though, overtime is nothing new, a point made by first-year head coach Jonathan Taylor to his team heading into OT.
"First, I tried to settle them down because we were upset that we gave her the open shot. But then I said, 'We've been here before,' " said Taylor referring to games against Lenape, Bishop Eustace and Trenton earlier in the season. " 'Let's regroup. The game's not over. It's only overtime.' "
Payton praised Taylor's composure and leadership during the game. "He's a major boost," said the Hofstra-bound senior. "He stepped up and took this job, and now he's leading us."
A game that saw many lead changes but was tight from the start was also physical and fast with both teams using their speed to try to gain the upper hand.
Sterling was led by O'Donnell, who scored 17 points, giving her one point shy of 1,000 for her career. Junior forward Rachel Hodge added 13, and junior guard Monica Burch contributed 8.
For the Panthers, it was the 12 points from Jasmine Inge that put them over the top, including a wide-open three-pointer with less than a minute left that was the deciding basket in overtime.
"Jaz [Inge] was our MVP today. She really stepped up. I'm really proud of her," said Payton.
Fifth-year head coach Katie McDonald's team had the ball, up by one with less than two minutes to play. They decided to stall, but turnovers and a jump ball gave the ball back to Camden, which took the lead with 30 seconds left and never gave it back.
"The more we have the ball in our hands, the less time they have the ball in their hands," said McDonald. "We've been successful in managing a one-point lead, a two-point lead. We've done it a million times this season. Unfortunately it just didn't work out for us this time."
Next, the Panthers face the second-seeded Haddonfield Bulldogs, another tough opponent with whom Sterling split during the regular season Colonial Conference Liberty Division schedule.
"I'd rather spend all the energy we have and die trying because this is it," said Taylor. "I have five seniors on the team. This is the last time they are going to play together. They've been playing together since freshman year, some since middle school. So this is it. There's no time to be tired."
