Sterling hits gas, races by Hawks

Sterling High School junior guard Monica Burch is called "Boss" by her teammates, and her coach refers to her as the team's "little engine."
Both descriptions fit the speedy little guard Thursday night in a big way. Burch scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, sparking her team's come-from-behind 47-38 girls' basketball victory over visiting Haddon Township in a Colonial Conference interdivisional game.
Sterling (11-2), ranked No. 4 in the Courier-Post Top 20, trailed by as many as 10 points early in the third quarter. But the Silver Knights sped up the tempo, which helped force eight turnovers, and outscored the defensive-minded Hawks 15-7 in the quarter.
By game's end, they'd handed No. 13 Haddon Township (14-1) its first loss and exacted some revenge for being knocked out of last season's South Jersey Group 2 playoffs by the Hawks.
"We knew we had to play our game," said Burch. "It feels great. We were very fired up to play them. It was our day, it was our game. We kept our composure and played as a team."
Sterling forward/center Tanjae Lewis, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds, said, "We never, ever gave up. At halftime, we knew what we had to do."
The score was 29-29 going into the fourth quarter, and Sterling kept up the defensive pressure. The Silver Knights also let Burch do her thing.
Haddon Township took its final lead with 5:20 left on Katie Getzinger's jumper, but Sterling used an 11-2 spurt to secure the game. Burch's 3-pointer with 3:45 left put her team ahead 39-34 and it never trailed again.
"Haddon Township likes to play the half-court game. When I told them (her team) at halftime we were going to press, their eyes lit up," Sterling coach Katie McDonald said. "We changed the tempo of the game.
"Monica is the little engine that makes this team go. She's extremely unselfish. She had 21 points tonight, and I was amazed. All I remember is her dishing it and controlling it. Everyone wants to make the big shot, and they will say, "We want the ball in Monica's hands.' "
The Hawks, who got a team-high 14 points from Jess Brown, led 22-14 at halftime after playing great defense and hitting their shots. They helped limit Sterling guard Kylie O'Donnell to just five points for the game, but Sterling found other ways to score.
